Green Building
Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley is seeking a Green Point Rating on all its current and future projects. A Green Point Rated home is graded on five categories: Energy Efficiency, Resource Conservation, Indoor Air Quality, Water Conservation and Community. Habitat seeks to build green homes to protect our environment as well as create cost efficient homes for our partner families.
Green Features in Habitat Homes
Habitat uses Cellulose Spray Wall Insulation – Cellulose is composed of 85% post-consumer papers (newspapers, yellow pages, etc) with a 15% borate additive. Compare this recycled content to fiberglass which has at most 40% recycled content and foam which has virtually none. Furthermore, cellulose insulation takes less energy to make than any other insulation material. For more information click here.
High fly ash content in concrete (30%). Fly ash is a byproduct of coal-burning power plants.
